Love a good meet cute! Sam and I met in college as friends and like to joke that we don't actually remember meeting each other, shaking hands, etc. he was always just kind of...there. Like he just appeared in the story one day and then everything went on as normal. We were friends for two years (such good friends that we lived together platonically for a few weeks during summer school) before it turned into more. I was coming out of a yucky situationship with a boy who'd really hurt my feelings and in a moment of vulnerability I turned to Sam and earnestly asked, "Will you just make out with me??" The rest, as they say, is history. We've been together 13 years now and married for 4!
This is such a heartwarming story!! You two! Those mysterious yet playful photos!
We met on a VT ski trip with a small group of friends. (Everyone knew each other, he and I were the last of the group about 10 ppl who hadn’t met yet). I was not single. I was 7 years in a relationship, we had lived together for 5. It was on the outs, i wanted out, he wanted marriage, I was deep in solo therapy!
Bob had been single for 3 years or so. We hit it off very friendly, partied and skied together all weekend…. I remember so vividly the entire weekend and particularly buzzing moments. Our story takes off from there. I should write more about it!!
What a beautiful story Kaitlyn! And such precious photos.
Scott and I also met on a dating app (Hinge). I struggled a little bit with this story at the beginning because I wanted our meeting story to be more "romantic". But honestly, it's the only way we would have crossed paths and boy am I grateful for that app now! We had a 9:30am coffee date before work and three years later we got married on the same date at 9:30am. 🤍
1) I love this question and my husband and I were talking about this a few nights ago on our family beach trip- my kids asked about our first kiss and I said we kissed in his car outside my apartment after he asked me to go out again the next week. I also told them I sang Taylor Swift’s Love Story at karaoke on our first date. I wrote this post in 2021 and it’s now been 13 years since our first date, married 10 years in October.
Today is the 10 year anniversary of when Nemat and I went on our first date. We met in April 2011 at karaoke night at Green Burro, and he sent me a FB friend request the next day. I accepted it, but there was no real indication of him being interested in me and other than liking some of his ‘80s song posts I didn’t meet up with him again after that first night for 2 months. It was my first summer living in an apartment by myself and only a couple of my law school friends stayed in Greensboro that summer. Our first picture together wasn’t taken until a cookout at his house in late August- back then we only had flip phones!
This was the FB message Nemat sent that started our whole relationship. I have asked him several times what made him send it that day (a day that happened to be the last time I ever talked to the person I dated briefly in law school who moved after graduation). He said he wanted to try dating someone different than the women he was used to, and he liked that I went to Duke. I was very nervous to go out with someone I hadn’t seen or spoken to in 2 months. On our first date I left my wallet with my ID, we ran into his mom and aunt at beach music, and we kept talking each other out of the right trivia answers. But he still asked me out again at the end of the night and when I hadn’t heard from him about the plan I called him, and we decided to go to lunch at Sushi Republic.
Today we went to the same place as we went on our second date. And today Hall and Oates Kiss On my List was playing as we were about to get out of the car just like it did when he drove me back to my apartment on our second date 10 years ago! #firstdateanniversary #sushidate🍣
-the first message he sent me said if I was living in Greensboro that summer did I want to go to beach music on Thursday- he asked me out on June 13, 2011, first date was June 16. I sent my sister a text in the car saying why am I doing this, I don’t talk to boys or people (a quote from Ice Princess).
2) Yes I think it’s a good question to see the love the couple has for each other. Thinking back on the beginning of our relationship makes me remember how magical it felt. one of the moments that stands out very strongly in my mind was when I kissed him goodbye and said “I really like you,” and he walked away from me down the pathway, turned around and said “I really like you too” with a somewhat surprised look on his face. He has said several times going out with me was not what he expected.
This is so sweet and I love the photos! Pete and I met while we were doing dolphin research at a facility in Hawaii. We were supposed to overlap for 2 weeks. I was tired and looking forward to going home and then I changed my flights and stayed an extra 2 weeks. I returned to Boston for 5 months and we emailed and had epic phone calls (before cell phones) and then I went back to Hawaii for two weeks and we knew this was a thing.
Awww I love this. You two look made for each other. I listened to your podcast recently and could just hear all the love and chemistry as you too bantered (I was giggling when your husband forgot the name of the podcast! That's so something mine would do too!). Thank you for sharing your story, so freaking sweet. My husband and I met through a mutual friend as little babies back in 2006. We fell out of touch when he moved out of state to run a coffee shop and we reunited in 2011. I remember extremely early on he took me to meet his family for Easter (I didn't realize that's what we were doing and was NOT prepared). His mom had made me a little Easter basket and welcomed me in like she'd known me for years. We got engaged like six months later!
Oh my goshhhhh. I love this reuniting theme I’m seeing in these meet cute stories. It feels like timing is everything. He did the sneak attack with the family move—thank goodness it was a warm welcome 🙏🏼🙏🏼
We met briefly as 19 year olds, then forgot all about each other, then re-met at a party in college when we were 22 and went on one (1) date, neither of us were feeling it and we eventually lost contact. Three years later, we both ended up moving to the same new area, re-met again, and fell totally in love and got married a year later!
I love a good love story ❤️ I also almost backed out of the dinner where I first met my husband. It wasn't a date, but a gathering at a friend's house. I remember feeling 'ugh I'm just not in the mood to meet new people today'. But with him the energy flowed so easily that some part of my soul felt like I'd known him forever.... After the dinner he was going to see a French movie called 'The first day of the rest of your life'. It always gives me goosebumps when I recall that day 😃 And yes, in couples work I do think it's very telling how people talk about their beginning and whether there's that warm glow that enters the space - or not....
OMG, I LOVE this story! I also met my bf on an app and I remember feeling exactly the same way you were beforehand (wanting to cancel b/c I was so sick of the same convo over and over), and then being SO surprised when we met (the whole 'energy is so different in real life' part). I love stuff like this...thank you so much for sharing! 💗
Ahhh I'm beaming just reading both of your experiences. I'm not in a relationship at the moment, but reading your story makes me feel hopeful that it will happen for me, too!

Love the photos so much.
Oh my gosh, yes. yes. yes. Living for this origin story.

Thank you so much for sharing, Elizabeth. That turn around moment is just so heart melting 🫠 the way that feeling can shock us ❤️❤️
This is very sweet, and I love that you included his perspective as well
I had to bring in the real star of our show 😉 🌟

Wowowoowowow-Dolphin research in Hawaii!! That feels like a one in a million type overlap ❤️❤️

Third times the charm, for real 🍀 ❤️

That just gave me what we call FBCs in my house, full body chills 😂
Thank you for sharing, Vicki. Your perspective on this is particularly insightful given all your work with couples.

Yayyy!! Another app romance here. Every once in awhile, it’s a revelation.

☺️ I’m sure your chart has signs of where this lives for you. It’s so clear how much love, warmth and realness you have to share 💕💕
