In therapy, clients will often recount something to me and then wait. Waiting for me to have a set reaction. But often, they haven’t said what this something meant to them, how they experienced it, what they felt. Which leaves me responding, “Say more…”

This is a monthly series where I explore what I engaged with—TV, books, movies, food, movement, maybe the rogue purchase—and what it made me feel.

One thing before we jump in, I show up very much as myself here. Myself first, and all my other labels are secondary. If a therapist speaking candidly feels like too much to your system, that is absolutely is OK and this may not be the best particular newsletter for you.

Gosh, January just sucks doesn’t it?

I know lots of people with January birthdays who have to deal with all our negativity and lethargy this month while they are trying to celebrate their god damn existence. I mean, it’s a character building experience in and of itself to have a January birthday.

The truth seems to be, this year especially, that January is a time where we are just trying our best to get our lives back together.

It reminds me of one of my favorite things on this planet. And that is…

…the Recombobulation Area at Milwaukee’s Airport. After you’re discombobulated AF going through security–your shoes and belt are off, you’re separated from your bags, your ticket–you get to take a breath in a space designated just for getting your shit together.

Whether we like it or not, whether it’s in line with what we’re told the New Year is supposed to be, for a lot of us, January is a Recombobulation Area.

Which I don’t think is “bad,” it just is.

What follows are my companions for this month of recombobulating.

Nana Mensah in The Diplomat (Netflix); Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson in Babygirl (A24); All Fours book cover (Miranda July); Remi Wolf (Ragan Henderson for Vulture)
